Full Canopy Genetics in Europe: The genetics and people behind MycoBag

When people talk about mushroom genetics, the conversation often starts with cultivar names.

Tidal Wave. Albino Jedi Mind Fuck. Whitebilly. Mac Galactic.

But a name on its own only tells part of the story.

Behind a well-documented genetic line there are people making selections, observing phenotypes, keeping records, comparing generations and deciding which characteristics are worth continuing to work with. That process — and the people behind it — is one of the reasons Full Canopy Genetics has become such an important part of the MycoBag project.

MycoBag exclusively distributes selected Full Canopy Genetics lines in Europe, connecting genetic work developed in the United States with the MycoBag closed Plug & Play format.

Today, that relationship already includes genetics such as Tidal Wave Ape, Albino Jedi Mind Fuck, Whitebilly, Cascadian Teacher, Mac Galactic and Hydra.

And this is only the beginning.

Full Canopy has developed and documented a much wider genetic library in the United States, and the intention is to progressively bring more of that work into the MycoBag European catalogue.

What is Full Canopy Genetics?

Full Canopy Genetics is a Colorado-based mushroom genetics and mycology research company built around selection, genetic development, research and documentation.

Rather than looking at mushroom genetics as a collection of fashionable names, Full Canopy focuses on the characteristics expressed by individual lines and how those characteristics develop over successive selections.

That distinction matters.

Two cultivars can belong to the same species and still express very different morphologies. A familiar cultivar name does not automatically tell us everything about its provenance, stability or selection history. This is why Full Canopy’s work is particularly interesting to MycoBag: it gives us a clearer genetic context behind the products we present in Europe.

Full Canopy describes itself as research-driven, and its work has also received recognition in specialist mushroom competitions in the United States.

For MycoBag, however, awards are not the whole story. What matters more in the long term is knowing where a line comes from, who has worked with it and what can genuinely be documented about it.

Santiago Ongay and Ryan Spooner: the people behind Full Canopy Genetics

Behind Full Canopy are its founders, Santiago Ongay and Ryan Spooner, better known in the community as Santi and Spoon.

Their backgrounds are different, and that is part of what makes the partnership interesting.

Santi came into the project with experience spanning technology, business and mycology. Spoon brought his own technical background and a strong focus on genetic observation, selection and development.

Together they turned what had initially been independent work and experimentation into Full Canopy Genetics, building a genetics library and a broader research platform in Colorado.

The company became increasingly public as the regulatory environment around mushrooms changed in Colorado, allowing the pair to develop Full Canopy into a more visible genetics and research business.

Santiago Ongay: the connection between Full Canopy and MycoBag

For MycoBag, Santiago Ongay has an especially important role.

He is not only a co-founder of Full Canopy Genetics. Santiago is also CTO of MycoBag.

That creates a direct connection between the genetics work taking place around Full Canopy in the United States and the technological development of MycoBag in Europe.

It also explains why the Full Canopy relationship is more than a conventional supplier agreement.

MycoBag’s R&D work is closely connected with Full Canopy Genetics, while Santiago sits at the intersection of both projects. Genetics, product development and technology are therefore able to evolve with a shared understanding of what each side is trying to achieve.

Ryan “Spoon” Spooner and the selection side of Full Canopy

Ryan Spooner, or Spoon, is the other half of the Full Canopy founding partnership.

His presence is especially visible in Full Canopy’s technical discussions around genetic traits and selection.

The important idea is not that every mushroom must look identical. In fact, some genetic lines are interesting precisely because of the variation they can express.

Instead, selection means observing what a line actually does, documenting those observations and making deliberate decisions about which traits should continue to be developed.

That emphasis on observation rather than hype fits naturally with the way we want to talk about genetics at MycoBag.

If something is documented, we can talk about it. If a lineage or characteristic has not been properly documented, we would rather say so than invent a story around it.

A much bigger genetics library than the MycoBag range

The Full Canopy genetics that appear in MycoBag represent only a small part of the wider library that Full Canopy has documented over the years.

Their current website, official catalogue and more recent research content reference a broad range of cultivars and selected lines. These include:

  • Albino Bluey Vuitton
  • Albino Jedi Mind F*ck (AJMF)
  • Albino Penis Envy Revert (APER)
  • Avery’s Albinos
  • Cascadian Teacher
  • Casper
  • Enigma
  • Golden Teacher
  • Halo Gates
  • Hillbilly
  • Leucistic Mazatapec (LMAZ)
  • Lucid Gates
  • Mac Galactic
  • Mazatapec (Low Spore)
  • Melmac
  • Moby Dick
  • Natalensis Super-Strength (NSS)
  • Nutcracker
  • Old Dirty Penis Envy (ODPE)
  • Thrasher
  • Tidal Wave
  • Tidal Wave 2
  • Tidal Wave / Albino Penis Envy (TW/APE)
  • Toque F8 “Nerds”
  • Whitebilly
  • Yeti
  • Z Strain

That list is useful because it puts the MycoBag collection into perspective.

We are not working with a genetics company built around two or three names. Full Canopy has accumulated and documented a much broader library, including classic cultivars, albino and leucistic selections, unusual morphologies, hybrids and ongoing selection projects.

It is also important to make one distinction clear: the broader Full Canopy library should not be interpreted as a list of genetics currently available from MycoBag in Europe.

Full Canopy’s US library is much larger. MycoBag is introducing selected genetics progressively.

You can explore Full Canopy’s current US genetics range on the official Full Canopy Genetics website.

Full Canopy Genetics in Europe: the MycoBag collection

So what does the relationship look like in Europe?

The easiest way to understand it is to separate the genetics from the format.

Full Canopy Genetics provides the genetic identity and selection work. MycoBag integrates selected genetics into its own European product system.

MycoBag uses a closed Plug & Play format with prepared substrate and a microporous filter designed to support passive gas exchange while reducing unnecessary manual handling.

The genetic line and the bag itself perform different roles. Bringing the two together gives each MycoBag product a clearly identified genetic foundation rather than treating the cultivar name as an afterthought.

Tidal Wave Ape

Tidal Wave Ape is one of the most recognisable names in the current MycoBag range.

Full Canopy’s documented library includes the Tidal Wave / Albino Penis Envy combination, often shortened to TW/APE, connecting two genetic families that have become extremely familiar within modern mushroom genetics.

For MycoBag, Tidal Wave Ape also has another important role: it is one of the cultivars already attracting the strongest organic search interest from people researching contemporary genetics.

That makes it a natural introduction to the wider Full Canopy collection.

Albino Jedi Mind Fuck (AJMF)

Albino Jedi Mind Fuck, usually abbreviated as AJMF, is another core genetic line in the MycoBag collection.

Full Canopy documents AJMF as an albino isolation associated with the Jedi Mind Fuck lineage and has published substantially more provenance information about it than is typically available for many commercially named cultivars.

That makes AJMF particularly useful when explaining why genetic provenance matters.

It also illustrates the difference between a cultivar and a species. “Albino” describes a phenotype expressed by the line; it does not turn AJMF into a separate mushroom species.

Whitebilly

Whitebilly is a Full Canopy selection associated with the Hillbilly family.

Full Canopy describes Whitebilly as a leucistic isolation that it worked over multiple generations. For us, this is a good example of how selection can create a recognisable identity within a broader genetic family.

It is also increasingly becoming a name in its own right rather than simply being treated as a variation of Hillbilly.

Cascadian Teacher

Cascadian Teacher is particularly interesting because of the familiarity of the word “Teacher”.

Golden Teacher is one of the best-known cultivar names in modern mushroom culture, but Cascadian Teacher should not simply be treated as another label for Golden Teacher.

It is a selected line documented separately by Full Canopy Genetics, with its own selection history and identity.

This is exactly why provenance is useful: familiar names can help us understand the broader genetic context without pretending that two cultivars are automatically identical.

Mac Galactic

Mac Galactic comes from another part of the Full Canopy library and is particularly relevant to the future direction of MycoBag.

Unlike names such as Golden Teacher or Tidal Wave, Mac Galactic is still relatively unfamiliar to many European researchers.

That is part of what makes the Full Canopy partnership exciting.

The aim is not only to follow genetics after they become widely known. It also gives MycoBag the opportunity to introduce less familiar selected lines to Europe with clearer provenance from the beginning.

Hydra

Hydra is another genetic line being integrated into the MycoBag catalogue.

Hydra is also a good example of our approach to genetic claims.

Its Full Canopy provenance is identified, but detailed parentage is not currently published in the documentation available to MycoBag. Rather than fill that gap with speculation, we prefer to leave the lineage open until stronger documentation exists.

There is nothing wrong with saying that something is not yet known.

In fact, we believe that is far more useful than repeating an unsupported genetic story simply because it sounds good.

Why Full Canopy Genetics and MycoBag work together

The relationship makes sense because both projects are approaching different parts of the same problem.

Full Canopy works on genetics, selection and research.

MycoBag works on product architecture, accessibility and bringing selected genetics into a closed system for the European market.

And Santiago Ongay provides a direct human and technical link between both companies as a founder of Full Canopy Genetics and CTO of MycoBag.

That connection gives the partnership a degree of continuity that would be difficult to achieve through a simple buyer-supplier relationship.

When we talk about Full Canopy Genetics at MycoBag, we are talking about people we actively work with, not simply a logo added to a product page.

More Full Canopy genetics are coming to Europe

The six genetics currently highlighted by MycoBag are not the end of the story.

They are the beginning of a broader European collection.

Full Canopy continues to maintain and develop genetics in the United States, and the wider library gives MycoBag room to introduce new selections progressively rather than trying to launch everything at once.

Which genetics come next will depend on the evolution of the catalogue, documentation, product development and European availability.

What we can say is that the direction is clear: more Full Canopy Genetics will gradually become part of the MycoBag ecosystem in Europe.

The goal is not to have the longest possible list of cultivar names.

It is to build a catalogue where each genetic line has a reason to be there, a clear provenance and enough information for people to understand what they are actually looking at.
