Jedi Mind Fuck vs Penis Envy: differences in morphology, lineage and potency

Jedi Mind Fuck (JMF) and Penis Envy (PE) are two of the most searched Psilocybe cubensis cultivars, and they are often compared as if they were close relatives. They are not. Both belong to the same species, but they differ clearly in morphology, spore production, cultivation behaviour and, above all, in how well their history is documented. This guide separates what can be observed from what is simply repeated online.

Jedi Mind Fuck vs Penis Envy at a glance

Jedi Mind Fuck (JMF) Penis Envy (PE)
Species Psilocybe cubensis Psilocybe cubensis
Typical morphology Classic cubensis shape: caps open normally, medium stems Very thick, dense stems and bulbous caps that often stay closed
Spore production Normal Very low, because caps rarely open fully
Growth Vigorous; AJMF is rated 5/5 for ease of cultivation by Full Canopy Genetics Generally described as slower and less forgiving
Albino variant Albino Jedi Mind Fuck (AJMF) Albino Penis Envy (APE)
Documented origin Isolated in the early 2000s from a wild P. cubensis specimen found in Georgia (USA) Widely told origin story, but little primary documentation

Are they the same species?

Yes. Both are cultivars of Psilocybe cubensis. Names such as “Jedi Mind Fuck” or “Penis Envy” are cultivar labels used by growers and genetics suppliers, not botanical classifications. Two cultivars of the same species can still look and behave very differently because of selection over many generations. For a wider overview, see our guide to magic mushroom strains.

Morphology: the most visible difference

Penis Envy is recognised by its unusual shape: thick, dense stems and rounded caps that frequently remain closed, even at maturity. Because the caps rarely open, the gills release few spores. This trait is one reason why Penis Envy is often propagated through cloning or tissue culture rather than spores.

Jedi Mind Fuck shows a more conventional cubensis morphology: caps that open, release spores normally and fruit bodies with medium-thick stems. Its albino isolate, AJMF, keeps this general shape but with very pale to pearl-white fruiting bodies.

Origin and lineage

The origin of Penis Envy is usually attributed to spores collected in the Amazon and later selected by cultivators in the United States. The story is widely repeated, but there is little primary documentation to confirm the details, so it should be treated as part of the cultivar’s folklore rather than established fact.

The history of Jedi Mind Fuck is much better traced. According to Full Canopy Genetics, the original JMF was isolated in the early 2000s by the Shroomery user “Myco Joe” from a wild Psilocybe cubensis specimen found in Georgia, in the United States, and has been a staple in the cultivation community ever since. In other words, JMF does not descend from Penis Envy: it comes from a separate wild collection.

Albino Jedi Mind Fuck (AJMF), the line used by MycoBag, is an albino isolation of that original wild lineage. Full Canopy Genetics acquired the line from Denver Mycology, crossed it with spores received from Edward Grand, and then worked and stabilised it to produce the current isolation.

Cultivation behaviour

Growers commonly describe JMF as vigorous and relatively forgiving, while Penis Envy is described as slower to colonise and fruit, with lower yields and more sensitivity to conditions. These are general observations reported by cultivators rather than controlled measurements, and results always depend on the specific genetics, substrate and environment.

Which one has more psilocybin?

Penis Envy is frequently described online as one of the higher-alkaloid cubensis lineages, but published comparative data between specific JMF and PE lines are scarce. Alkaloid content also varies considerably between batches, flushes and even individual fruiting bodies, and depends on growing conditions and post-harvest handling. Cultivar names alone do not guarantee potency.

For AJMF there is measured data. Across multiple rounds of laboratory testing carried out by Full Canopy Genetics between May 2023 and November 2025, AJMF averaged 1.027% total alkaloids and 0.8% PCBE (psilocybin + psilocin), which places it as a moderate-to-high potency cultivar, with a notable potential for minor alkaloids. Equivalent data for a specific Penis Envy line measured under the same conditions are not available, so a direct comparison is not possible.

The only reliable way to compare two samples is a laboratory analysis. With MycoTest you can quantify psilocybin, PCBE (psilocybin + psilocin) and total alkaloids in your own samples and compare them on an objective basis.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jedi Mind Fuck a type of Penis Envy?

No. According to Full Canopy Genetics, JMF was isolated in the early 2000s from a wild Psilocybe cubensis specimen found in Georgia (USA). It is a separate lineage, not a Penis Envy derivative.

Why does Penis Envy produce so few spores?

Its caps often remain closed or open only partially, so the gills release few spores. This is why it is frequently propagated by cloning.

What is the difference between JMF and AJMF?

AJMF (Albino Jedi Mind Fuck) is an albino isolation of the original JMF lineage. The line used by MycoBag was acquired from Denver Mycology, crossed with spores from Edward Grand and stabilised by Full Canopy Genetics. Read more in our Jedi Mind Fuck mushrooms guide.

Which is more potent, JMF or Penis Envy?

There is no direct comparison under the same lab conditions. AJMF averaged 1.027% total alkaloids and 0.8% PCBE in Full Canopy Genetics’ tests between 2023 and 2025, while data for Penis Envy vary widely between sources. Only a laboratory test can measure the alkaloid content of a specific sample.
